Mentor Mentee Mixer!
Woohooo! What a party it was on November 30th, as Diane said. But yeah it was pretty awesome. I had a great time as I’m sure everyone else did. We started out with snacks - and of course the famous Kettle Corn. The Youth Insights Leaders (YIL) love the kettle corn- can’t live without it. And yea that’s right we are the leaders! There were also some chips and fruit. And some chocolate kitty cookies...

Practice Tours
Today, Monday November 16th, we practiced for our O’Keeffe tour which we will give this Saturday to the teens from the Bronx Museum. We started by breaking up into pairs to generate questions and go over the research we did last week. Once we had outlined some of the questions and topics we would bring up in our discussions we reconvened to talk a bit about the transitions from one...
Preparing for O'Keeffe Tour
This week we did more tour training for the Georgia O’Keeffe exhibition.
We first learned about the 5 C’s of leading a tour: Confidence, Clarity, Conduct, Content and Connect. Giving a tour is much more than simply giving the viewer information about a piece of art, it is about connecting with them and engaging them in an discussion about art.
We then learned about different...
Georgia O’Keeffe: Abstraction
On Monday October 26th the Whitney CAB (Community Advisory Board) members got an insider tour from assistant curator of the Georgia O’Keeffe exhibition, Sasha Nicholas. O’Keeffe’s work is very vibrant and full of color. Going through the exhibition is like walking through her entire life as an artist from beginning to end. It documents her art in chronological order from her charcoals and water...

Spring Rolls and Sustainability with Britta Riley!
Our first event of the fall semester with hybrid artist Britta Riley, who combines environmental issues with art, was super green! Some of you might have met Ms. Riley on Family Day, an annual event here at the Whitney Museum, early this October where she showcased her work alongside the flower and nature themed work of Georgia O’Keeffe. Each kid that participated in the Family Day...

Sorry for the month long delay Whitney blog museum fans
The Youth Insights program has been in existence since 1997. Since then many of the Youth Insights interns have gone on to be established and celebrated in their careers. It just so happens that the Youth Insights Summer Intensive program is all about career awareness. So it seems fit that the former interns come back and share their...

The Final Day..... Party!!!!!!!
July 30, 2009
This summer has been completely awesome for all of us YI Summer Intensive kids! We topped it off perfectly with food, music, and print-making the very last day of the program. If there’s anything we know, it’s how to P-A-R-T-Y!!!
We had plenty of pizza, five pies to be exact, cut into perfect slices that made it available for me to have as much as I wanted without...

ASYMPTOTE!!!
Sorry for the super delayed post Whitney blog fans!
On July 15, the Youth Insights crew traveled long and hard to the Asymptote Architecture in Queens. Now… that doesn’t sound like much… but the Manhattan bound 7 train was messed up so for the unlucky one’s (meaning me), they got stuck switching between three trains and having sweaty old people press up against them as if it...
Our Superb Trip to the Brooklyn Museum on a Rainy...
Our trip to the Brooklyn Museum rocked ! At the museum , we viewed various pieces of art from all over the world , some contemporary and some older art. Some of the artwork included wood carvings from Africa , art from India , paintings from Europe and a sarcophagus from Egypt . We even got a chance to participate in a gallery chat that the apprentices at the museum conducted . During the...
High Line Park
On the 22nd of July YI visited the High Line in West Chelsea. It was absolutely enticing. It was unlike any place I had been to before. I never in my life thought there could be a park in the sky! Before the High Line was a ravishing and aesthetically pleasing park, it was a railway used for transporting meat and other goods from upstate to Chelsea, where it would then be packaged and distributed...
Pier 59 Studio
Today we were on the scene learning about how Pier 59 Studio is set up and how it is used. The area is used for production of large-scale photography and video projects, including commercials and advertisements for many different groups. People come in and use the studios to their will based on what their goal is at the end of the day. They are able to manipulate the resources around them but all...
P.S.1
On July 15th, 2009, the YI group visited the PS.1 Contemporary Art Center. This museum, which is located in Queens New York, is affiliated with the Museum of Modern Art. PS.1 once served as a public school, which closed down during the 1960’s. In 1976, the director of the school turned the abandoned schoolhouse into a museum for the public. Architecture has been a major aspect of the PS.1...
Presentations
At the very end, each group presented how they would get a certain audience to use window farms. Everyone came up with really good ideas and gave Rebecca and Britta a lot to work off of. I think that we all learned a lot about marketing and starting a craze.
What a great day!

Making window farms a Craze
During the last part of out day at Eyebeam we teamed up with kids from one of the programs at the center to try to figure out how we could start a window farm craze. In groups, we went through various steps, which would get people to start using window farms by appealing to their specific interests.
Window Farms
After walking around the center for a while, getting to know the place and seeing some cool art, we met up with two residents, Rebecca Bray and Britta Riley to discuss their window farm concept.
They explained to us that a window farm accomodates hydroponic plants and vegetables. This means that no soil is needed. Their goal is to get everyone in New York City to use window farms and grow food in...
The breakdown
Continuing with our tour, we were enlightened about the various people that work at Eyebeam. There are residents who are chosen to come to Eyebeam based on project proposals. The residents are given money and they are basically given the time, space, and “collective brain power” of Eyebeam to experiment and prototype their design ideas.
Fellows are given a salary and work at Eyebeam...
EYEBEAM Art and Technology Center
Tuesday, July 14
Today the Whit crew went to the Eyebeam Art and Technology Center (http://eyebeam.org/) to see what kinds of awesome stuff they’ve been cooking up. Eyebeam is a non-profit center with the goal of exposing many different audiences to new technologies and media arts. They also emphasize the role of new media as important for cultural production.
When we got there we were met...
Interviewing and extra resume info
July 15, 2009
Today at the Whitney, Youth Insights sat down and talked with Lisa Dowd, the human resources manager at the museum about interviewing and resumes. We learned very significant DO’S and DON’TS from Lisa in a very informative conversation.
So here’s what we learned and some things I would like to share:
Resumes: Short, Sweet, and Significant.
Make sure your resume...
Socrates Sculpture Park
Socrates Sculpture Park was a wonderful park, it gave us (the Whitney Interns) the ability to get a more hands-on experience and allowed the artists’ messages to really come across. The State Fair exhibition is themed around American rural life. The artists use the State Fair as a means to comment about animal husbandry, specialized horticulture, small scale farming, culinary arts, and...
JAPANTHER AND NINJASONIK!
This Saturday the Whitney rocked and rolled with Japanther and Ninjasonik. It was very exhilarating, fun, energetic, and the vibe was great. A very important part of the day was the children’s event. Many children along with their families came out to enjoy with Whitney museum. Kids participated in many activities such as creating their own comic books, making music, and even exploring the...
