Socrates Sculpture Park

Socrates Sculpture Park was a wonderful park, it gave us (the Whitney Interns) the ability to get a more hands-on experience and allowed the artists’ messages to really come across. The State Fair exhibition is themed around American rural life. The artists use the State Fair as a means to comment about animal husbandry, specialized horticulture, small scale farming, culinary arts, and the pageantry within these fields that happens in fairs across the country.

I was really excited when we got there. I was ready to touch anything the tour guide would allow me to touch. In the entire park I had my four favorite pieces…

  • The Ride, 2009 by Emily Feinstein

Was a dysfunctional amusement car ride. Each car was slightly different from each other. It brought me back to my younger days, where amusement parks consists of cotton candy, wooden rides, and teddy bears in contrast of the hi-tech roller coasters that reach over 45 stories at 128 mph.

  • Arbol de la vida, 2007 by Margarita Cabrera

“Tree of life”- but instead of a tree Cabrera replaces it with a life size replica of a tractor all made in CLAY!! This piece is a symbol of agricultural industry with a mix of Mexican culture.

  • The Big Apple Showdown, 2009 by Pisa Puno

My Fav!! This was a funny urban obstacle course. Everyone seemed to have fun here.

  • Remote Arm Wrestle, 2009 by Willam Stone

Something we would find in many state fairs made out of pipes. When Danielle and Jill wrestled the world shook underneath me for laughing too much

The Socrates Sculpture Park had a very nostalgic feeling and with the art work being so open it really got the artist’s message across. The pictures above say it all….
