Interviewing and extra resume info
July 15, 2009
Today at the Whitney, Youth Insights sat down and talked with Lisa Dowd, the human resources manager at the museum about interviewing and resumes. We learned very significant DO’S and DON’TS from Lisa in a very informative conversation.
So here’s what we learned and some things I would like to share:
Resumes: Short, Sweet, and Significant.
- Make sure your resume is no longer then a page. No one wants to read your life story and about your every indulgence.
- Be sure to use correct grammar, spelling and punctuation.
- Only state things that have to do with the job position that you want, make sure to relate your life experiences to that position. Be sure to put your best foot forward.
Cover letter: Marketing and selling yourself
- Your cover letter should be a summary of your resume, and the way you can really express your wants, needs and capabilities.
Thank You Letter: Always remember your please and thank you’s.
- Send a thank you letter to your interviewer and overseer for taking the time out to meet and greet you. It’s a sign that you are mature, polite and very interested.
Interview: Speak for yourself
- This is the chance to shed light on things your resume may not be able to. besides anyone can write up a resume that sounds convincing but the proof is in the pudding. So make sure your presence is felt in a positive way.
Here are some things to remember:
- dress appropriately in a suit, dress, skirt, blouse, button down, shoes, tie, etc.
- Don’t wear too much jewelry.
- Be sure to cover up tattoos and excessive piercings.
- Greet all interviewers in a polite and mature way. Say, “Hello” and shake a hand or two.
- Speak loud, clear, and fluently.
- Don’t frigid, move around or show any signs of fear or nervousness. That’s something that could make or break your interview.
- don’t dominate or dictate the conversation. You don’t want to come off as arrogant or bossy.
So those are the things Youth Insights learned today at the Whitney, hopefully these tips can be helpful and land that dream job.
