ASYMPTOTE!!!
Sorry for the super delayed post Whitney blog fans!
On July 15, the Youth Insights crew traveled long and hard to the Asymptote Architecture in Queens. Now… that doesn’t sound like much… but the Manhattan bound 7 train was messed up so for the unlucky one’s (meaning me), they got stuck switching between three trains and having sweaty old people press up against them as if it were ok….
But enough about those people!
Asymptote Architecture is a place located in Queens near the 45 Road-Court House Square train stop on the 7 train. The neighborhood is great because its two blocks away from 5Points, an amazing graffiti building, and a block away from PS1, great art museum associated with MoMA, and if you walk a few blocks from there you can reach the Irish Center, cute small art gallery with a stage that does local events.
In Asymptote, various architects, and other very important architecture-associated people, come to design and create architecture plans, models, and designs that they will present at various architecture competitions. The winners of these competitions usually only get the praise of winning the competition, though some designs do get produced into actual buildings. People are paid to work in the space and some are invited to come and work.
Though most of the place was very BUSINESS BUSINESS BUSINESS! They do seem to enjoy themselves when they’re there doing their TOP SECRET competition designs. In the basement we met a man named Paco who was “kind-of-German” (exact quote FYI) who was full of energy and information. The environment was fun and relaxing in some points as well. One room had a light color changing option where the room would be lit with red, blue, green, etc… colors with lights, which were donated from Austria, and would calm you down while in the basement they had joking stickers such as a paper saying “DON’T TOUCH I KILL YOU!”
Asymptote was pretty amazing but wouldn’t allow us to take pictures sadly since it is a private competition area and they don’t want their super cool designs being stolen.
